Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the whole thing about being judged by a jury of our peers?

That just doesn't work for me. I mean, it does, but my peers aren't Lew's, or Jumper's or Trav's.

Let's just say that I'd finally had enough of socks on the floor and beer and TV weekends and voting for Democrats (not, mind you, that Trav does any of those things; this is just hypothetical channelling to my last marriage) and I beat the asshat to a bloody pulp and bury the body in the back yard.

My peers, that is any woman who has ever been married, would let me off.

Jumper's peers would probably convict, because I didn't take him out with a well placed shot to the head.

Lew's peers would just want to talk about trains.

See what I mean?

I say we just shoot them all and let God sort it out.

Jury of your "peers" more or less means persons from the same community. In other words, you'll have a "country" jury, a "city" jury, or a "suburban" jury depending upon the court you're in. It doesn't necessarily mean people from the same background.

People who can connect the dots in this world tend to exercise more restraint when it comes to judgments. The big awards come from people who think more with their heart and less with their mind, and unfortunately, that group constitutes the majority in our society. And like I said earlier, the people who can connect the dots always seem to be able to get out of jury duty, or else get ran by the attorneys during voir dire.

I have been a registered voter since I was 18. Hmmm that's 24 years and never, ever once got a notice for jury duty.

I'd have no problem serving.

I see no hope in tort reform as long as we keep electing lawyers to office. They are not going to make any laws that would effect their businesses.

I know some of the details would have to be ironed out, but I have idea.
I think if you sue somoene. If you loose you have to pay for defense attorney and your lawyers gets nothing! It would stop some lawyers from taking stupid cases and it would also stop many out of court settlements in which someone gets money for nothing, just because it was cheaper to settle.
